Education
Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University, majoring in Mathematics, 1986.
Professional Experience
since June 2007, Sports Endeavors, Hillsborough, North Carolina
Just joined Sport Endeavors where I've combined my passions for programming and soccer.
September 1998 to June 2007, AMS Services, Windsor, Connecticut.
My current duties in the Sagitta custom development department involve altering our insurance agency management product to our clients' unique needs. To accomplish this I create and modify Active Server Pages which communicate with our D3 or UniVerse database server. I program in the appropriate BASIC dialect for the database, write VB Script and Javascript for the ASPs as well as build COM components with Visual BASIC. The Sagitta system runs a browser user interface and until 2003 ran exclusively with a D3 database. Since 2003 we have been migrating our application to run on a UniVerse database using essentially the same ASPs. To satisfy custom requests I spend time with the clients helping determine specifications and designing the user interface. I have also written a number of integrations with third party applications working with other programmers and non-technical people. These generally involve SOAP messaging with web services. Other duties include writing stand alone programs to run on the desktop in VB and Delphi as well as training fellow programmers in VB, ASP and SQL.
since Autumn 1997, Independent Contract Programming.
In my free time I develop complete applications for various banks in my region. These applications are written in Delphi with a Paradox database and designed for multiple users across a local area network. I am as proud of the efficiency of the user interfaces I've designed as I am of the satisfaction provided to my customers.
July 1995 to September 1998, Connecticut On-Line Computer Center, Avon, Connecticut.
My primary mission was to maintain a customizable terminal emulator written
in Visual BASIC. I was also involved in the development and maintenance of a new product which converted customers' mainframe data into a Paradox database. At the
end of my tenure I was modifying a PC based banking product, written to
serve individual banks with an Oracle database, for use in a service bureau
setting. COCC has been serving banks in New England for the past 30 years
with an NCR mainframe and this project represented their first foray into the
PC world for the company's core application.
December 1989 to June 1995, Software Marketing Associates, Rocky Hill, Connecticut.
After being moved from Chicago to Connecticut by SMA, my duties included
writing and maintaining the software modules for Postal Presorting, ZIP+4
and Carrier Route Assignment, Merge Purge, ZIP Code Correction and Resident
Mail Processing. Originally written in Pick BASIC, I ported these modules
to UniData, a UNIX database manager. SMA is a value added reseller to the
mailing industry providing mailing list management, business management and
product fulfillment solutions. Being a small company, customer support and
training were a large part of the job as was the administration of several
different varieties of Pick and UNIX computers. Near the end of my time
there, I was developing an application for Windows in OpenInsight. After
being named Employee of the Year for 1993, they had my copy of the Domestic
Mail Manual, a huge document detailing all the postal regulations, autographed
by the Postmaster General. The owner of the company said, "You're probably
one of the top experts in the country on the DMM. You know more than the
people who wrote it. That's pretty scary."
February 1987 to November 1989, Rapp Collins Marcoa, Chicago, Illinois.
Hired as a Technical Support Assistant, I quickly advanced through the ranks
in the fun and predatory world of direct advertising. RCM was the third
largest direct advertising agency in the country and my responsibility was
for all phases of its data processing. My primary tasks were to write programs
for results analysis in dBASE III+, acquire and maintain Compaq PCs, and train
the employees in their proper use. I installed a dozen Macintosh computers for
an automated ad production system from copy and art to page layout to
transmitting the PostScript files to the print shops. Administration of the
fully integrated voice and data PBX was also part of the job. After one
successful presentation of an innovative national sales analysis to a large
client, the President of the company gave me a healthy slap on the back and
proclaimed, "Bart, you're a goddamn hero!"
June 1986 to January 1987, Richard Day Research, Evanston, Illinois.
After working part-time for more than a year while finishing college I became
one of three full-time employees at RDR. I was involved in all phases of
public opinion research including questionnaire design, interviewing
respondents, data entry design with dBASE III+, statistical analysis with
SPSS+ and the writing of final reports. On my last day there, Mr. Day
remarked, "You dragged us kicking and screaming into the computer age."
